2010 REALIGNMENT REVIEW
Random notes about the new UIL realignment, released this morning.
- The Arlington schools have drawn Weatherford, North Crowley and Fort Worth Paschal as its new dance partners for the next two years. Of the three, Weatherford is the most familiar to the AISD, since Weatherford was in Sam Houston’s 3A district from 1964-66 and spent time with the rest of the family from 1988-92.
- Arlington has actually played the Kangaroos 18 times and has won 11 of them. Weatherford has not beaten Arlington since 1954. Bowie is 3-0 against Weatherford, but hasn’t played them since 1997. Lamar is 6-0 against the Kangaroos, having beaten them decisively in non-district the past two years. Martin is 5-1, losing only in 1990 and Sam Houston is 3-2-1, but has not played the Kangaroos since a controversial 23-23 tie in 1991.
- Fort Worth Paschal was in a district with the AISD from 2002-04, but probably wishes it hadn’t been. The Panthers were 1-9 in district action those two years. Arlington is 9-4 against Paschal and hasn’t lost to the Panthers since 1966. Bowie is 2-2 against the Panthers and hates to be reminded that the Vols were the one team Paschal beat the two years it was in our district. Lamar is 2-0, having scored 120 points in those two games. Martin is 7-0 and Sam Houston is 4-2, having lost to the Panthers the past two years in the season opener.
- North Crowley is a mostly unknown commodity to the AISD. Arlington is the only team to ever play the other Panthers, beating them in a 2008 Bi-District playoff game.
- Grand Prairie will be doing a lot of site-seeing along I-20 the next two years, as all of its 5-5A partners, except Midlothian, are located close to the Interstate. The Gophers and Warriors are familiar with Cedar Hill and Duncanville, since they’ve been together the past two years, but Irving has gone elsewhere, separating the West Dallas County foes for the first time since the 1998-2000 alignment. The GPISD hasn’t been with Mansfield since the 1986-88 alignment, the first time Mansfield was in 5A.
- Mansfield Legacy and Timberview are making their 5A debut this fall, so they’ve never met their new partners. Mansfield did play in the old 4-5A with Duncanville and Cedar Hill from 2002-04, so they have met.
- Since Mansfield Summit has always been a 5A school until now, the Jaguars are unfamiliar with their new district. Summit is within five miles of Seguin, but will meet them for the first time this fall. Seguin has taken on Everman, Crowley, Granbury and Joshua the past two years, and made the playoffs both times. Seguin and Burleson have played in the season opener the past six years, with each team winning three times. Neither of the local schools has ever played Cleburne.
